[ENG] In 1907 Herman Hesse spent a few days mediating and fasting in a cave near Monte Verità. During these days he collected the visions and insights that went on to be very influential in his thinking and shaped some of the most important works of his literary career. The 60’s Psychedelia, Western counterculture and Eastern spiritual awakening would not be the same without books like Demian, Siddharta, Journey to the East, or The Glass Bead Game. The image and sound of this film were shot there and are a homage to this cave and its possible invocations.

Grotta is part of a Fieldworks series of films, which is an ongoing experiment with ambient video and radio frequencies. It represents a collection of landscape video notes that Casas has been developing since 2000. Through these works, the artist attempts to capture the atmospheric qualities of various landscapes through visual and audio field recordings taken on location. Additionally, the work emphasizes the asynchronous and random relationship between soundtrack and film, blending documentary and experimental film styles in a post-structural approach.

[CAST]En 1907, Herman Hesse pasó algunos días meditando y ayunando en una cueva cerca del Monte Verità. Durante estos días, recopiló las visiones e ideas que posteriormente ejercerían una gran influencia en su pensamiento y darían forma a algunas de las obras más importantes de su carrera literaria. La psicodelia de los años 60, la contracultura occidental y el despertar espiritual oriental no serían lo mismo sin libros como Demian, Siddharta, Viaje al Este o El juego de los abalorios. La imagen y el sonido de esta película fueron grabados allí y son un homenaje a esta cueva y a sus posibles invocaciones.

Grotta forma parte de su serie Fieldworks, que constituye un experimento continuo con vídeo ambiental y frecuencias de radio. Representa una colección de apuntes en vídeo de paisajes que Casas ha estado desarrollando desde el año 2000. A través de estas obras, el artista intenta capturar las cualidades atmosféricas de diversos paisajes a través de grabaciones visuales y de audio realizadas in situ. Las obras, además, enfatizan la relación asincrónica y aleatoria entre la banda sonora y la película, fusionando estilos documentales y experimentales en un enfoque pos-estructural.
