(CAST) Hace unos cuatro siglos se levantó en Mallorca la fortaleza sobre la que hoy se asientan los cimientos de Es Baluard Museu. El proyecto lo llevó a cabo el ingeniero renacentista Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino, quien también ideó múltiples fortificaciones situadas en el Mediterráneo y en el corazón de Europa. El hecho de pensar en murallas situadas en estos enclaves nos introduce, paradójicamente, en una línea de tiempo que sabemos cuándo empieza y que, lamentablemente, aún sigue su curso. Nos interesa dar visibilidad a la contradicción y a la paradoja que caracteriza la historia. De algún modo, presentamos un recorrido que nos acerca tanto a Frantz Fanon, reconociéndonos herederos de acciones colonialistas y de ocupación, como a las relaciones y denuncias que Foucault apuntó en Vigilar y Castigar. ¿Qué relación hay entre un baluarte, una cárcel y una escuela? Queremos escuchar, como diría Gayatri Spivak, las voces que existen al otro lado del muro.
El objetivo de esta exposición es abrir una reflexión desde nuestra contemporaneidad en torno a la necesidad de introducir elementos arquitectónicos, físicos y mentales, con el fin de justificar acciones políticas que auguren protección. Siguiendo este planteamiento, acercamos las preguntas al objeto que quiebra nuestra seguridad: ¿de qué o de quién nos protegemos?
(ENG) About four centuries ago, the fortress on top of which the foundations of Es Baluard Museu stand today was erected in Mallorca. The project was carried out by the Renaissance military engineer Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino, who also devised multiple fortifications located in both the Mediterranean Region and the heart of Europe. Thinking about fortifications and walls anchored in these enclaves introduces us, paradoxically, into a timeline that we know when it begins and that, unfortunately, is still running. We are interested in casting light on to the contradiction and paradox that characterizes history. In a way, we present a journey that brings us closer both to Frantz Fanon, recognizing ourselves as heirs of colonial and invasive enterprises, as well as to the relationships and denunciations that Foucault pointed out in Discipline and Punish (1975). What is the relation between border walls, prisons and schools? We want to listen to, as Gayatri Spivak would say, the voices that inhabit the other side of the wall.
The goal of this exhibition is to open a debate about the compulsion to erect physical and mental architectural elements, in order to justify political actions that augur protection. Following this approach, we raise questions to the object that breaks our security: what or whom do we protect ourselves against?
