STATEMENT

(ENG) Esther Ferrer (San Sebastián, 1937), is a pioneer and one of the leading representatives of performance art in Spain, she began her artistic practice in 1967 with the ZAJ group (formed by artists Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce and Juan Hidalgo) until its dissolution in 1996, and, since then, she has used performance as her main medium. Performance is the guiding thread of all her work and it represents  a moment where time, space and presence intervene simultaneously: "the action consists of leaving the picture, of the two-dimensionality, to enter the space, and use your body as a subject of a simple and direct work".

From the mid-70s she returned to make plastic works using intervened photographs, installations, paintings based on the series of Pi and Prime numbers, objects, and so on. Among these works stand out her series of Self-portraits (in process since 1981), Prime numbers (developed through various spatio-temporal formats), the models of her spatial projects or installations, or that of Educational toys (1980s). Her work can be considered as part of minimalist and conceptual art, which started in the 60s of the twentieth century, having writers such as Stéphane Mallarmé and Georges Perec, or the Fluxus group as her main references, as well as in the feminist ideas of that period of time. She has also collaborated with other artists / musicians such as John Cage or Tom Johnson.

Parallel to her artistic practice, it is worth mentioning her important theoretical work, developed both in her journalistic collaborations for various publications and in courses and lectures offered in European and American universities.

(CAST) Esther Ferrer (San Sebastián, 1937), pionera y una de las principales representantes del arte de performance en España, empezó a participar en las actividades del grupo ZAJ (con Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce y Juan Hidalgo) en 1967 hasta su disolución en 1996, y, desde entonces, hizo del arte de acción su principal medio. La performance es el hilo conductor de toda su obra y representa para ella un momento donde intervienen a la vez el  tiempo, el espacio y la presencia: "la acción consiste en salir del cuadro, de la bidimensionalidad, para entrar en el espacio, y utilizar tu cuerpo como sujeto de un trabajo simple y directo”.

A partir de mediados de los años 70 volvió a realizar obras plásticas a través de fotografías intervenidas, instalaciones, cuadros basados en la serie de números primos o Pi, objetos, etcétera. Entre estos trabajos destacan las series de Autorretratos (en proceso desde 1981), Números primos (desarrollada a través de diversos formatos espacio-temporales), sus maquetas de proyectos espaciales o instalaciones, o la de Juguetes educativos (década de 1980). Su obra se inscribe en la corriente de arte minimalista y conceptual, iniciada en la década de los 60 del siglo XX, que tiene a Stéphane Mallarmé, Georges Perec, o Fluxus como referentes, así como en los feminismos de aquel momento. También ha colaborado con otros artistas/músicos como John Cage o Tom Johnson.

En paralelo a su práctica artística, cabe destacar su importante labor teórica, desarrollada tanto en sus colaboraciones periodísticas para diversas publicaciones como en cursos y conferencias ofrecidas en universidades europeas y americanas.

(ENG) Throughout her long career, Esther Ferrer has participated in numerous performance festivals and has exhibited her work in different museums, both in Spain and abroad (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Norway, England, Belgium, Holland, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Korea, etc.). She has also received several awards: in 1999 she was one of the representatives of Spain at the Venice Biennale; in 2008, she was awarded the National Prize for Plastic Arts; in 2012 with the Gure Artea Award from the Basque Government, and in 2014 with the MAV Prize (Women in the Visual Arts), the Marie Claire de l'Art Contemporain Prize and the Velázquez Prize for Visual Arts.

Among her solo shows we highlight “Models and preliminary drawings "in 2012 at àngels barcelona, in 2013 “Le chemin se fait en marchant” at FRAC Bretagne. In 2014 at the MAC / VAL (Musée d’art contemporain du Val-de-Marne) she presented "Face B. Image Auto-portrait”. In 2017-18 the Reina Sofía National Art Center Museum in Madrid presented the exhibition "All variations are valid, including this one”. Amongst her lastest projects in 2018 we find the solo show “Intertwined spaces” at the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao and a solo exhibition at the National Dance Museum in Paris.

(CAST) A lo largo de su extensa carrera, Esther Ferrer ha participado en numerosos festivales de arte de acción y ha expuesto su obra en distintos museos, tanto en España como en el extranjero (Alemania, Italia, Suiza, Francia, Dinamarca, Noruega, Inglaterra, Bélgica, Holanda, Polonia, Eslovaquia, República Checa, Hungría, Bulgaria, Estados Unidos, Canadá, México, Cuba, Brasil, Tailandia, Japón. Corea, etc.). Asimismo, ha sido objeto de diversos reconocimientos: en 1999 fue una de las representantes de España en la Bienal de Venecia; en 2008 fue galardonada con el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas; en 2012 con el Premio Gure Artea del Gobierno Vasco, y en 2014 con el Premio MAV (Mujeres en las Artes Visuales), el Premio Marie Claire de l’Art Contemporain y el Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas.

Entre sus exposiciones individuales destacan: en 2012 Models and preliminary drawings”,  en la galería àngels Barcelona, en 2013 en el Frac Bretagne: “Le chemin se fait en marchant. En 2014 en el MAC/VAL (Musée d’art contemporain du Val-de-Marne) presentó “Face B. Image Auto-portrait.  En 2017 en el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía de Madrid con la exposición “Todas las variaciones son válidas, incluida esta”. Entre sus proyectos en 2018 encontramos la exposición individual “Espacios entrelazados” en el museo Gugghenheim de Bilbao y la exposición personal en Octubre que tendrá lugar en el Centro Nacional de Danza de Paris.
