Self-Congratulatory Toast is a performance accompanied by an art object. The work was shown in a group exhibition at NEST (Den Haag), under the theme Me, Myself & I. I placed a neatly pressed pair of trousers onto a white plinth. The trousers were stuffed with colourful confetti, and weighted down by 2 bricks that I selected from the street. Tied to one of the trouser belt loops was a yellow helium balloon with a circumference of 1.50 meters, which was partially sponsored by a shop, so that I did not have to finance my own work out of pocket. My performance on November 14th 2013 consisted of inviting everyone to raise their glass in a toast to me, urging others to welcome me into the art world, using what I imagined to be the standpoint of a naive and hopeful art academy undergraduate in the current political climate. I asked a friend to “do the honours” after my toast, and lift the bricks from the trousers. The helium balloon shot up to the ceiling, yanking the trousers along with it, and spraying colourful confetti all over the crowd and floor. This is the text of the toast:
Colleagues! Friends! Peers! Please join me! I would like to make a toast! Thanks are in order, to you for attending, to the artists, who give us their work to contemplate, and to NEST for creating this occasion. I would also like to thank my personal sponsor, de ballonnenwinkel.nl, for providing me with the financial means to make my artwork. Obviously, I would like to congratulate my peers, for being a part of this exhibition, but most of all, I would like to congratulate myself. I think my presence at this exhibit will help me find my personal brand of authenticity as an artist. I believe I’ll have a long career of critical self-reflection, failures that ultimately lead to triumph, and finally, to the financial independence I deserve just for being myself. If you have glass, please raise it! Edd, could you do the honours? (Edd lifts brick from the trousers) May I forever be able to hold up my own trousers! Cheers and Thank you!

Self-Congratulatory Toast es una performance acompañada por un objeto de arte. La obra se presentó en una exposición grupal en NEST (La Haya), bajo el título Me, Myself & I. Coloqué un par de pantalones bien plegados sobre un pedestal planco. Los pantalones estaban llenos de confeti de colores y dos bloques cogidos de la calle los sujetaban. Al otro extremo de los pantalones até un globo amarillo de helio con una circunferencia de 1,50 metros, que fue parcialmente financiado por una tienda, de modo que no tuve que financiar la obra de mi propio bolsillo. Mi performance el 14 de noviembre del 2013 consistió en invitar a todos los asistentes a hacer un brindis por mí, instándoles a darme la bienvenida al mundo del arte, partiendo del punto de vista de una inocente e ilusionada estudiante de Bellas Artes en el contexto político actual. Le pedí a un amigo que ‘hiciera los honores’ después de mi brindis, tirando de los pantalones y repartiendo confeti de colores sobre los asistentes y el suelo. Este es el texto del brindis:
¡Compañeros! ¡Amigos! ¡Colegas! ¡Por favor, uniros! ¡Me gustaría hacer un brindis! Los agradecimientos están en la orden del día, a vosotros por asistir, a los artistas, que nos dan sus obras para que las contemplemos, y a NEST por crear esta ocasión. Me gustaría también agradecer a mi financiador personal, ballonnenwinkel.nl, por proveerme con los medios financieros necesarios para hacer mi obra de arte. Obviamente, me gustaría dar la enhorabuena a mis colegas, por ser parte de esta exposición, pero sobretodo, me gustaría dármela a mí misma. Creo que mi presencia en esta exposición me ayudará a encontrar una marca personal auténtica como artista. Creo que tendré una carrera larga de auto reflexión crítica, fracasos que finalmente conducirán a triunfos, y finalmente, a la independencia financiera que merezco solo por ser mí misma. ¡Si tenéis una copa, por favor levantadla!
