Comparison via a third makes a reflection on the concept of work. Harun Farocki shows working procedures in traditional, newly industrialized, and highly industrialized societies. It is the suggestive atmosphere of what is presented that causes impact on us. The images appear without critical commentary, by only showing the conditions of production, Farocki manages to make the viewer aware of the similarities between the different stages of industrialization in society, and thus he manages to emphasize the dubious nature of the traditional notion of progress. With this work Farocki highlights how different production modes require their own timing and duration and thus bricks become the foundations of society.
