(ENG) Ion Grigorescu, born in 1945 in Bucharest where he lives and works, is an iconic figure of performance and conceptual art in Romania. Along with fellow Eastern European artists such as Jiří Kovanda, Július Koller, Mladen Stilinović, or the late Tibor Hajas, Ion Grigorescu is increasingly acclaimed for his role in effectively cultivating resistance, and underground, clandestine art under Communist totalitarianism. As a forerunner of the conceptual and performative use of the body as an artistic medium in Romania since the early 1970s, Grigorescu is also one of the very few Romanian artists who have radically and conceptually illustrated contemporary concerns in perfect synchronicity with his time. Grigorescu has made an invaluable contribution to the shaping of a critical consciousness capable of articulating a genuinely universal critique in rationalist-discursive, performative, and artistic terms.

In 2011 Grigorescu represented Romania at the 54th International Exhibition at the Vennice Biennale. Ion Grigorescu’s work was also exhibited in important shows such as the Venice Biennial 1997, Italy, In Search of Balkania at Neue Galerie in Graz 2002, Austria, In the Gorges of the Balkans at Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel 2003, Germany, the Documenta 12 in Kassel 2007, the Berlin Biennale and Les Promesses du Passé in Pompidou Center Paris 2010, Out of Place at Tate Modern 2011, Transmissions: Art in Eastern Europe and Latin America, 1960–1980 at MoMA (New York, 2015), as well as the retrospective In the Body of the Victim 1969–2008 at Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw curated by Kathrin Rhomberg.

(CAST) Ion Grigorescu, nacido en 1945 en Bucarest, donde vive y trabaja, es una figura emblemática de performance y arte conceptual en Rumania. Junto con otros artistas de Europa del Este como Jiří Kovanda, Koller Julius, Stilinovic Mladen, o la tarde Hajas Tibor, Ion Grigorescu es cada vez más reconocido por su papel de manera efectiva en el cultivo de la resistencia, el metro y el arte clandestino bajo el totalitarismo comunista. Como un precursor del arte conceptual y el performativo uso del cuerpo como medio artístico en Rumania desde principios de 1970, Grigorescu es también uno de los pocos artistas rumanos de radicalidad y conceptualmente ilustrados por preocupaciones contemporáneas en perfecta sincronía con su tiempo. Grigorescu ha hecho una valiosa contribución a la formación de una conciencia crítica capaz de articular una crítica auténticamente universal en términos racionalista-discursiva, performativa y artística.
