STATEMENT

(ENG) Gaussi´s work explores cultural identities, aspects of memorization and remembrance, and of identity. The artist often develops projects in close relation to the place in which they are created, examines the characteristics and unique aspects of her surroundings. Gaussi´s multi-cultural background- the artist grew up in Kabul, Delhi and Berlin- has a greatly influenced her artistic practice, yet her interest goes beyond national borders and categorizations.  

(CAST) El trabajo de Gaussi explora las identidades culturales, aspectos de la memoria, el recuerdo y la identidad. La artista suele desarrollar proyectos vinculados estrechamente con el lugar en el que son creados, examinando las características y aspectos únicos de su entorno. El trasfondo multicultural de Gaussi - ella crece en Kabul, Delhi y Berlín- tiene una gran influencia en su práctica artística, ya que sus intereses van más allá de los límites nacionales y las categorizaciones.

BIO

(ENG) Jeanno Gaussi (Kabul, Afghanistan, 1973) lives and works in Berlin. Gaussi’s work explores cultural identity, aspects of remembrance, memory and identity. Her projects are developed in close relationship with the place where they are created, examining the characteristics and unique aspects of each context. Gaussi began as video artist and filmmaker and her shorts were shown at several international festivals, winning the 1st prize at the 54th International Short Film Festival of Oberhausen, Germany. She was also nominated for the best German short of the year and selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus 2007. Most of her installations have been produced whilst she has been an artist-in-residency in Pakistan, Jordan, Turkey and Palestine. She is also a member of the Afghan Contemporary Art Research team launched by the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, which documents the current state of contemporary art in Afghanistan. She has exhibited in the Southern Panoramas of the 18th International Contemporary Art Festival in São Paulo, in the No-Mad-ness in No-Man's Land show in Taiwan and koal Galerie in Berlin. She was selected for the dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel and Kabul. She has recently participated in the last edition of the Havana Biennial.

Sus proyectos se desarrollan en estrecha relación con el lugar en el que se crean, examinando las características y aspectos únicos del entorno. Gaussi comenzó como video artista y cineasta y sus cortos se han mostrado en varios festivales internacionales, obteniendo el 1er premio en la 54 edición del International Short Film Festival de Oberhausen, Alemania. Fue también nominada para los premios al mejor corto alemán del año y seleccionada para el Berlinale Talent Campus de 2007.  Muchas de sus instalaciones han sido realizadas durante sus residencias en Pakistán, Jordania, Turquia o Palestina y es miembro del Afghan Contemporary Art Research team iniciado por el Van Abbe Museum en Eindhoven, que documenta la situación actual del arte contemporáneo en Afganistan. Ha expuesto en el Southern Panoramas de la 18th International Contemporary Art Festival en São Paulo, en el No-Mad-Ness in No-Man’s Land show en Taiwan y en la Galerie koal de Berlin. Fue seleccionada para la dOCUMENTA (13) en Kassel y Kabul. Recientemente ha participado en la última Bienal de la Habana.
