[ENG] In the line of previous projects (such as Blow Up Blow Up, 2009 and Gastropoda, 2013), which were based on the semiotic inquiry of the photographic image, Joan Fontcuberta’s new work arises from the hypothesis that the images undergo an organic metabolism: they are born, they grow, they reproduce and die to restart again the cycle of life. For this reason, Fontcuberta is interested in the archives, since they contain sick and agonizing images, images that, as a consequence of the transformative biology of time and chemistry, suffer from some type of disorder that disturbs their documentary function and disables them to continue "living" in the archive. These same images, whether they’ve been produced by himself or searched in photographic collections, are subject to a state of trauma. A trauma that, according to Fontcuberta, "brings us to the elegy for what remains of the materiality of chemical photography, an ode to its remains and excrescences."

[CAST] En la línea de proyectos anteriores (tales como Blow Up Blow Up, 2009 y Gastrópoda, 2013), basados en la indagación semiótica de la imagen fotográfica, el nuevo trabajo de Joan Fontcuberta parte de la hipótesis de que las imágenes experimentan un metabolismo orgánico: nacen, crecen, se reproducen y mueren para reiniciar el ciclo de la vida. Por este motivo, Fontcuberta se interesa por los archivos, ya que éstos contienen imágenes enfermas, agónicas, imágenes que, como consecuencia de la biología transformadora del tiempo y de la química, padecen algún tipo de trastorno que perturba su función documental y las inhabilita para seguir “viviendo” en el archivo. Son las mismas imágenes, ya sean producidas por él mismo o hurgadas en colecciones fotográficas, las que están sometidas a un estado de trauma. Un trauma que, según Fontcuberta, “nos aboca a la elegía por lo que queda de la materialidad de la fotografía química, una oda a sus restos y excrecencias”.
