STATEMENT

(ENG) Michael Snow is unanimously regarded as one of the key figures in the development of experimental cinema since the 1960s. As a painter, photographer, sculptor, and musician, Snow’s work reflects his multifaceted spirit and his fundamental interest in the mechanics of perception and its paradoxes. As the artist had declared:

"My paintings are made by a filmmaker, my sculptures are being made by a musician, my films by a painter, my music is composed by a filmmaker, my paintingsare made by a sculptor, my sculpture is being made by filmmaker, my films are being made by a musician, the music is created by a sculptor and sometimes they all work together. "[1]

Snow has focused on questioning the illusory nature of representation underlining the mimetic nature of the means that he used in order to create images of reality, thus moving away from abstract representations. In his work, he invites the viewer to think about the references of the reproduced images and the nature of preception itself.

También pintor, fotógrafo, escultor y músico, la obra de Snow refleja su espíritu polifacético y su interés fundamental por la mecánica de la percepción y sus paradojas. En palabras del artista:

“Mis pinturas las hace un cineasta, las esculturas las hace un músico, las películas las hace un pintor, la música la hace un cineasta, las pinturas las hace un escultor, las esculturas las hace un cineasta, las películas las hace un músico, la música la hace un escultor y algunas veces trabajan en conjunto.”[1]

Snow se centró en cuestionar el carácter ilusorio de la representación haciendo evidente el carácter mimético de los medios que empleaba para crear imágenes de la realidad, se alejó de representaciones abstractas. En su obra, se invita a la reflexión acerca de la referencia de la imagen recreada y la naturaleza de la misma percepción.

 

BIO

(ENG) Michael Snow was born in Toronto, Canada where he currently lives and works. Through out his career he had lived in Montreal, Chicoutimi and New York. He was a musician who had performed solo as well as with various ensembles (most often with the CCMC of Toronto) in Canada, USA, Europe and Japan. Through out the years numerous of his recordings have been released. 

His films have been presented at festivals in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Korea, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA, and are in the collections of several film archives, including Anthology Film Archives in New York City, the Royal Belgian Film Archives, Brussels, and the Oesterreichesches Film Museum, Vienna.
 
He was a painter and a sculptor, though since 1962, most of his gallery work has been holographic or photographic. His work has been presented in private and public collections world-wide, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Museum Ludwig (Cologne and Vienna), Centre Georges-Pompidou (Paris), and both the Musée des Beaux-Arts and Musée d'art Contemporain in Montreal.
 
Since 1970 he did video, film, slide and sound installations, and published books such as Michael Snow/A Survey (1970), Cover to Cover (1975), 56 Tree Poems (1999), and BIOGRAPHIE of the Walking Woman 1961-1967 (2004), he did collaborative work for magazines like  Impulse (1975), Photo-Communique (1986), and C magazine (1993).
 
Retrospectives of his painting, sculpture, photography and holography works have been presented in institutions such as La Virreina in Barcelona, Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Filmmuseum Munich, Université du Québec à Montréal, Akbank Sanat Art Center in Istanbul, the Hara Museum in Tokyo, the Cinémathèque Française and Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris, Anthology Film Archives  and Museum of Modern Art in New York and L'Institut Lumière in Lyons, among others, and of his work in all media simultaneously in 1994 at the Power Plant and the Art Gallery of Ontario. A retrospective of his photographic work 1962-99 was presented at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels, touring to Centre National de la Photographie in Paris and MAMCO and Saint-Gervais in Geneva. Additional retrospective exhibitions have been exhibited in Vancouver Art Gallery and the Musée d'art Contemporain in Montreal.

Solo and group shows of his visual art works have been presented at museums and galleries in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Bonn, Boston, Brussels, Kassel, Lima, Los Angeles, Lucerne, Lyons, Minneapolis, Montreux, Munich, New York, Ottawa, Paris, Pittsburgh, Quebec City, Rotterdam, San Francisco and Toronto, among others. Michael Snow has executed several public sculpture commissions, the best known being Flight Stop at Eaton Centre and The Audience at Skydome (now Rogers Centre), both in Toronto. His The Windows Suite was opened in September 2006 at the Pantages Hotel and Condominium complex on Victoria Street, Toronto. 

He received numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1972) the Order of Canada (Officer, 1982; Companion, 2007), and the first Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2000) for cinema. Snow was made a Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres, France (1995) and in 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Université de Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Fúe un músico (piano y otros instrumentos) que ha tocado tanto en solitario como con diversos grupos (sobretodo con el CCMC de Toronto) en Canadá, Estados Unidos, Europa y Japón. Se han realizado numerosas grabaciones de su música. Sus películas se han presentado en festivales de Australia, Brasil, Canadá, Francia, Alemania, Corea, Italia, Japón, Holanda, Turquía, Inglaterra y Estados Unidos; y pertenecen a las colecciones de diversas filmotecas, incluyendo la Anthology Film Archives de Nueva York, el Royal Belgian Film Archives de Bruselas y el Oesterreichesches Film Museum de Viena.

Fúe pintor y escultor, pese a que desde 1962, la mayoría de su trabajo para galerías se basa en la fotografía o la holografía. Michael Snow ejecutó varios proyectos de escultura pública, entre los cuales los más conocidos son Flight Stop en el  Eaton Centre y The Audience en el  Rogers Centre, ambos en Toronto. The Windows Suite es una instalación permanente de pantallas de plasma sobre las fachadas de el Pantages Hotel y el complejo Condominium de Victoria Stre, (Toronto) que se inauguró en Septiembre del 2006. Recibió numerosos premios, incluyendo el Guggenheim Fellowship (1972) ; el Order of Canada (Officer, 1982; Companion, 2007), y el primer Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2000) para cine. Snow fue nombrado Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres, Francia (1995) y en  2004 fue nombrado Doctor honoris causa por la Université de Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne.
