(ENG) The Boghossian Foundation is pleased to present the exhibition Ekphrasis, curated by Bruno Cora, director of the Burri Foundation in Italy. It brings together pieces from more than forty artists from around the world, whose styles are as varied as the media they use, but in whose works the use of language plays a key role.
The definition of ekphrasis is a laudatory and constructed description of a work of art, real or imaginary, often designed on a model so as to achieve great evocative force. The first famous ekphrasis goes back to Greek Antiquity: this is the description Homer gives of Achilles’ shield in the Iliad. The weapon was forged by Hephaestus so that “everyone should be amazed”.
Some of the artists featured in the exhibition use language as “charged” writing, where the meaning lies in the format, like Shirin Neshat, Barbara Kruger or Jenny Holzer. Others, like Art & Language, Tracey Emin or Alighiero Boetti, address personal messages to the viewer. Finally, the question of legible and illegible is evoked in particular in the works of Marcel Broodthaers and Fred Eerdekens, in whose works the use of words also has a decisive place.
Three pieces presented in Ekphrasis have been designed specifically for the exhibition by Nasser Al Salem, Lawrence Weiner, and Peter Downsbrough.

(CAST) La Fundación Boghossian se complace en presentar la exposición Ekphrasis, comisariada por Bruno Cora, director de la Fundación Burri en Italia. Reúne piezas de más de cuarenta artistas de todo el mundo, cuyos estilos son tan variados como los medios que utilizan, pero en cuyas obras el uso del lenguaje juega un papel clave.
La definición de ekphrasis es una descripción laudatoria y construida de una obra de arte, real o imaginaria, a menudo diseñada sobre un modelo para lograr una gran fuerza evocativa. La primera ekphrasis famosa se remonta a la Antigüedad Griega: esta es la descripción que da Homero del escudo de Aquiles en la Ilíada. El arma fue forjada por Hefesto para que "todos se sorprendieran".
Algunos de los artistas que aparecen en la exposición utilizan el lenguaje como escritura "cargada", cuyo significado reside en el formato, como Shirin Neshat, Barbara Kruger o Jenny Holzer. Otros, como Art & Language, Tracey Emin o Alighiero Boetti, dirigen mensajes personales al espectador. Por último, la cuestión de la legibilidad y la ilegibilidad se evoca en particular en las obras de Marcel Broodthaers y Fred Eerdekens, en cuyas obras el uso de la palabra ocupa también un lugar decisivo.
Tres de las obras presentadas en Ekphrasis han sido diseñadas específicamente para la exposición por Nasser Al Salem, Lawrence Weiner y Peter Downsbrough.
