STATEMENT

(ENG) Spoken dialogue, text and original music compositions culminate in Richard T. Walker’s work in order to materialize into videos and photographs that investigate the complex relationships between language, the environment and ourselves. By using a contemporary meditation on Romantic landscape and the Romantic individual, Walker visually constructs and reveals inherent failures in language that highlight fickle inconsistencies within the current human condition. 

Using the experience of our environment as a metaphor, these inconsistencies are used as a critical tool to reveal a point of confrontation between innate desire, cultural interpretation and reality.His works become behavioural studies into the act of experiencing. This is set against a backdrop of questioning the difference between the actuality and the preconceived understanding of an experience.

These metaphors expand to expose moments in conversations and dialogues where people contemplate and come to terms with, or start to understand, a certain situation, relationship or occurrence. These moments are extracted from an ever-evolving loop of questions and answers that continuously tease us into thinking that we can understand who we are and the environment in which we inhabit.

(CAST) Diálogo hablado, texto, y composiciones musicales originales culminan en las obras de Richard T. Walker para construir vídeos y fotografías en las que se investigan las relaciones complejas entre el lenguaje, nuestros alrededores y nosotros mismos. A través de un acto de meditación contemporánea sobre el paisaje Romanticista y el individuo Romántico, Walker construye y descubre fallos arbitrarios e inherentes en el lenguaje que subrayan las inconsistencias de la condición humana.

Mediante la utilización de la experiencia de nuestros alrededores como metáfora, estas inconsistencias se usan como un mecanismo crítico que revela un punto de confrontación entre el deseo congénito, la interpretación cultural y la realidad. Las obras se convierten en estudios de comportamiento insertados en el mismo acto de la experiencia, y así poder cuestionar la diferencia entre la realidad y el entendimiento preconcebido de una experiencia.

Estas metáforas se expanden para revelar momentos en conversaciones y diálogos donde la gente contempla y empieza a aceptar, o a entender, algún tipo de situación, relación, u hecho. Estos momentos son extraídos de un círculo interminable de preguntas y respuestas que nos tientan constantemente a querer entender quienes somos y conocer los alrededores en las que nos habituamos.

(ENG) Richard T. Walker (British, born 1977 in Shrewsbury, UK) is based in San Francisco, CA. He received his BA in Fine Art from Bath Spa University College in 1999 and his MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London, in 2005.

His work has been exhibited in solo shows at Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Carroll/Fletcher in London, àngels barcelona, The Contemporary Austin in Texas, James Cohan Gallery in New York, Kadist Art Foundation in San Francisco and Galleri Image in Aarhus, among others. He has participated in group exhibitions in institutions such as Fabra i Coats in Barcelona, EAC in Montevideo, Kunstverein Springhornhof in Germany, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, Witte de With in Rotterdam and K21 in Düsseldorf, among many others.

Walker was a recipient of a fellowship at Kala Art Institute in 2007 and received an Artadia Award in 2009. He was an affiliate artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts from 2007–2009 and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2009. The artist is currently a senior lecturer at California College of the Arts and has been a visiting lecturer at the University of California in San Diego; San Diego State University; Mills College; Stanford University and Aarhus Kunstakademi. Selected collections include Kadist Art Foundation (Paris and San Francisco) and K21.
