Cathode ray television sets, custom electronics

ENG

Tristan Perich's "Linear Constructions" are installations for 1-bit video circuits and multiple cathode ray televisions. Individual video-generating circuits (designed and programmed by the artist) are wired to each television. The code on each chip synthesizes rapidly panning low-resolution 1-bit video patterns. When these binary signals, output from the chips as on and off pulses of electricity, are connected to a cathode ray television, they directly control its electron gun, translating electricity into light and lending a physical aspect to the digital image. Collectively, the independent patterns—moving at the same rate of one pixel per frame—form a new abstract surface, juxtaposing the static physicality of the television sets.

CAST
