Esther Ferrer (Solo show): "Esther Ferrer. Intertwined spaces". Guggenheim, Bilbao. 16.03.18 > 10.06.18

(ENG) A pioneer and one of the main representatives of performance art in Spain, Esther Ferrer (b. 1937, Donostia/San Sebastián)  started to participate in the activities of the ZAJ Group with Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce, and Juan Hidalgo in 1967, and since then, has made action art her main medium, even though in the 1970s she went back to creating staged photographs, installations, paintings based on series of prime numbers or ∏, objects, etc. Her oeuvre is a part of the Minimalist and Conceptual Art movement, which began during the 1960s with Stéphane Mallarmé, Georges Perec, John Cage, or Fluxus as its leading figures, as well as of the feminist movements of the time. Throughout her extensive career, Ferrer has participated in numerous action art festivals and has presented works at numerous museums. She has also won multiple awards: in 1999, she was one of the Spanish representatives at the Venice Biennial; in 2008, she was awarded with the National Prize in Plastic Arts; in 2012, she received the Gure Artea Prize from the Basque Government and in 2014, the MAV Prize (Women in Visual Arts), the Marie Claire Award in Contemporary Art, and the Velázquez Award in Plastic Arts.

This thematic exhibition will exclusively include unseen projects never realized as a part of an exhibition.

(CAST) Esther Ferrer (Donostia/San Sebastián, 1937), pionera y una de las principales representantes del arte de performance en España, empezó a participar en las actividades del grupo ZAJ con Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce y Juan Hidalgo en 1967 y, desde entonces, hizo del arte de acción su principal medio, si bien a partir de 1970 volvió a realizar obras plásticas a través de fotografías intervenidas, instalaciones, cuadros basados en la serie de números primos o ∏, objetos, etc. Su obra se inscribe en la corriente de arte minimalista y conceptual, iniciada en la década de los sesenta del siglo XX, que tiene a Stéphane Mallarmé, Georges Perec, John Cage o Fluxus como referentes, así como en los feminismos de aquel momento. A lo largo de su extensa carrera, Esther Ferrer ha participado en numerosos festivales de arte de acción y ha expuesto su obra en distintos museos. Asimismo, ha sido objeto de diversos reconocimientos: en 1999 fue una de las representantes de España en la Bienal de Venecia; en 2008 fue galardonada con el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas; en 2012 con el Premio Gure Artea del Gobierno Vasco, y en 2014 con el Premio MAV (Mujeres en las Artes Visuales), el Premio Marie Claire de l’Art Contemporain y el Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas.

Esta exposición de prisma temático incluirá casi exclusivamente proyectos inéditos, nunca realizados en un espacio expositivo.
