Galerie Martine Aboucaya is pleased to present the fourth exhibition by Peter Downsbrough. This american artist, who has been living in Brussels for over twenty five years, distinguishes himself through his simple and refined formal vocabulary, which creates an interaction between the space, the work and the viewer. In the main room are three pieces. The first one is composed of rectangular areas that are painted black, adhesive letters and lines. The second one consists of four metal bars, each in the form of a right angle, the letters AS welded onto one of them. The last wall piece is made of a diagonal line that cuts the wall until the word «opens». These works are surprising by their impressive dimensions balanced by a great economy of means. The words, often selected for their visual qualities, are out of context and mark the space. Also presented are five photographs Untitled (1/2). These pictures, made over the years and selected by the artist from his archives, have in common that half of the image is blocked by a wall. Inside the small room, the space is occupied by a new work from the series Two Pipes, One Standing, a variation on the Two Poles, thus referring to one of the trademark features of Downsbrough’s work. Finally, the work presented in the gallery office refers to the Two Lines, another classic element in Downsbrough’s work. Here, they are accompanied by the word «the», on the bottom of the wall. Trough the works presented here, the public is invited to actively read the space, consciously or unconsciously.
