[ENG] àngels barcelona is pleased to present For the joy of being together, they didn't have to agree, an exhibition which is fruit of the research that the Berlin-based Australian artist Alex Martinis Roe has done whilst in residence with BAR project in Barcelona. This is the third and last presentation of the program In a convivial mode presented by BAR project, the curatorial agency that promotes dialogue, hospitality, collaboration and exchange between artists and curators at local and international level.
For the joy of being together, they didn't have to agree is the new film that the artist has made during the three-month residency in Barcelona which is part of the To Become Two series, a project in process that includes a cycle of film installations, a workshop series, a series of public events, and a book on a specific genealogy of feminist politics.
To Become Two is a theory-practice history project, tracing a particular genealogy of political practice among a number of different feminist communities. The artist has attempted to look simultaneously at collective and personal histories in order to explore what has been, and what could be, transferred into feminist collective practices now and in the future. Each of the films explore the history and organisation of a particular collective or milieu and its connections to the groups explored in the other films: the Milan Women's Bookstore Collective, Psychanalyse et Politique (Paris), Women's Studies at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, a network of people who were part of the Sydney Women's Film Group and General Philosophy at Sydney University in the late 70s and early 80s and then a milieu in Barcelona including Duoda and Ca La Dona. The artist is working directly with these groups, and a younger generation around them, to performatively bring about new collective practices through the act of storytelling using various methods, including participant observation, oral history interviewing, archival research and collaborative social practices. In addition, each of these films explores the interior-architectural spaces that were used and created by these groups as a meditation on the materiality of each dispositif of their political practices. Her hope is that in telling these histories new propositions for new collective practices will emerge.
For the joy of being together, they didn't have to agree narrates a series of stories of how the political practice of a particular group of Italian feminists was taken on and developed by a very large and active milieu in the 90s in Barcelona. One of the main questions that the film explores is: how can one learn from the story of the practice of another? Through her oral history research the artist has discovered that in Barcelona the way the practice from Italy was translated into new contexts became a way for different groups to work together through difference. The other key discovery has been that this work, despite its difficulty, has only been possible because of its politics of desire, affirmation and joy, which in a relatively short span of time has reshaped the lives of women in Barcelona by enabling them to create their own spaces and communities.
The film was shot at Barcelona’s City Hall, the INEFC sports centre in Montjuic, the Guixot bar in the Raval district and an apartment in the distric of Sant Pere, La Ribera. Here eight women engage in a series of live translations of these stories in these locations where the events in the stories took place. The stories were written by the artist, and then translated live into Spanish and Catalan, and then into English.

Alex Martinis Roe was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1982 and has lived and worked in Berlin since 2009. Her current projects focus on feminist genealogies and seek to foster specific and productive relations between different generations, as a way of participating in the construction of feminist histories and futures. This involves developing research and storytelling methodologies, which employ non-linear understandings of time, respond to the specific practices of different communities, experiment with the dispositives of discursive encounter, and imagine how these entanglements can inform new political practices. In addition to her current research project To Become Two, she is exploring these methodological concerns in collaboration with theorist Melanie Sehgal and a research group called FORMATIONS within the framework of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

Esta es la tercera y última presentación del programa In a convivial mode, llevado a cabo por BAR project, la agencia curatorial que promueve el diálogo, la hospitalidad, la colaboración y el intercambio entre artistas y comisarios a nivel local e internacional.
For the joy of being together, they didn't have to agree (2015), es el nuevo filme producido por la artista durante su residencia de tres meses en Barcelona, convirtiéndose a la vez en la quinta película de la serie, To Become Two, iniciada en 2014 y aún en proceso de realización, como proyecto que engloba un total de seis filmes, seis instalaciones, varios talleres y eventos públicos, así como una publicación sobre la genealogía de la política feminista.
To Become Two (Convertirse en dos) es un proyecto que revisa el pasado de manera histórica, en el que se reúne teoría y práctica, y a través del cual se traza una genealogía particular de las prácticas políticas de distintas comunidades feministas. Este proyecto iniciado en 2014, y en proceso de realización hasta el 2016, engloba una serie de seis instalaciones de vídeo, que pueden ser mostradas individualmente o como instalación de siete canales, incluyendo elementos esculturales, de decoración interior y documentos de archivo, así como performances y talleres, y una publicación. Para cada una de estas seis instalaciones, la artista se ha centrado de manera simultánea en diferentes relatos colectivos y personales, y así explorar acontecimientos que han tenido lugar en el pasado y aquellos que pudieran llegar a acontecer en las prácticas colectivas feministas actuales y futuras.Cada uno de los vídeos explora la historia y organización diferentes grupos feministas y sus conexiones con los demás grupos tratados en los demás vídeos que completan la serie: el Colectivo-Librería de Mujeres de Milán, Psychanalyse et Politique (París), Estudios de la mujer en la Universidad de Utrecht, una red de personas que fueron parte del Grupo de Vídeo de Mujeres de Sydney y del de Filosofía General en la Universidad de Sydney a finales de los años 70 y principios de los 80 y, finalmente, en el contexto de Barcelona incluyendo a Duoda y Ca la Dona. Alex Martinis Roe investiga directamente a estos grupos, y a la generación más joven creada a su alrededor, para que de manera performativa puedan surgir nuevas prácticas colectivas a través de los diferentes relatos, utilizando varios métodos entre los que se incluye la observación participativa, las entrevistas, la investigación de archivos y las prácticas sociales colaborativas. Además, cada una de estas obras explora los espacios interiores arquitectónicos, que fueron utilizados y creados por dichos grupos, como un acto meditativo sobre la materialidad de cada dispositivo y sus prácticas políticas. De esta manera la artista desea que los futuros virtuales que emerjan a través del relato de estas historias se conviertan en propuestas para nuevas prácticas colectivas.
For the joy of being together, they didn't have to agree, narra una serie de historias que plasman la manera en la que se adaptó la práctica política de un determinado grupo de feministas italianas y fue desarrollado por un gran grupo activo en los años 90 en Barcelona. Una de las principales preguntas que la obra explora es: ¿cómo podemos aprender de la historia de la práctica llevada a cabo por otros? A través de su investigación histórica transmitida de manera oral, la artista descubrió que en el contexto de Barcelona la práctica que provenía de Italia fue plasmada en nuevos contextos y se convirtió en una nueva manera en la que los diferentes grupos trabajaran juntos a través de la diferencia. El otro descubrimiento clave ha surgido a con la realización misma de la obra, la cual, a pesar de su dificultad, sólo ha sido posible gracias a su política de deseo, afirmación y alegría, que en un espacio de tiempo relativamente corto, ha influenciado la vida de las mujeres de Barcelona hasta el punto de permitirles crear sus propios espacios y comunidades.
El rodaje del filme tuvo lugar en el Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, el centro deportivo INEFC en Montjuïc, el bar Guixot del Raval y en un apartamento en el barrio de Sant Pere, La Ribera. En este video ocho mujeres participan en una serie de traducciones consecutivas en vivo de estos relatos en los lugares donde los acontecimientos de dichas historias tuvieron lugar. Cada uno de los diferentes relatos fueron escritos por la artista y luego traducidos en vivo al español y al catalán, y luego al inglés.

Alex Martinis Roe nació en Melbourne, Australia en 1982 y vive y trabaja en Berlín desde el 2009. Sus proyectos más recientes se centran en las genealogías feministas y buscan fomentar las relaciones productivas específicas entre las diferentes generaciones, como manera de participar en la construcción de historias y futuros feministas. Esto implica la investigación y narración de historias en desarrollo y de metodologías, las cuales emplean usos no lineales del tiempo, respondiendo a las prácticas específicas de diferentes comunidades, y, experimentando así, con diferentes dispositivos de encuentro discursivo, e imaginando cómo estos relatos pueden informar nuevas prácticas políticas. Además de su proyecto de investigación en curso To Become Two, Alex investiga diversas prácticas metodológicas en colaboración con la pensadora Melanie Sehgal y el grupo de investigación FORMATIONS de la Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
