àngels barcelona is pleased to present the projects of artists Gaby Felten and Alex Martinis Roe and the curator Maja Ćirić, as the result of their research in the context of Barcelona whilst in residence with BAR project , the curatorial agency that promotes dialogue, hospitality, collaboration and exchange between artists and curators at local and international level.
Not in an Emancipated Way the first of the three presentations of In a convivial mode, a series of exhibitions, actions, conversations and screenings by Bar project’s residents Gaby Felten, Maja Ćirić and Alex Martinis Roe.
Due to the conviviality, closeness and proximity that living and working together has created among them, the residents decide to present their projects in the same physical context. It is not a collaborative work process, but an attempt to create a common public space for the presentation of an ongoing dialogue and exchange.
Not in an Emancipated Way is an exhibition conformed by a series of works that artist Gaby Felten has produced during her residency. Felten’s installations, videos and sculptures react to her direct environment and context, naively responding to the visual input she happens upon in Barcelona with a hands-on approach. Certain elements that are repeated throughout the city - the plaza, the public fountain, the sifon, the marble street sign, the beggar’s sign, the shopping trolley of recycled goods, the influence of Latin American and African culture and many more - are the stimuli for Felten to react from her position as a provider of labor in the western globalized context.
In the same way that she presents herself within the Barcelona context, partially as an artist, the works all incorporate an element of fragmentation: a broken street sign, a torn-up beggar’s sign, and cut-up or reconfigured maps of countries in the African, American and European continents, creating a kaleidoscopic witness of the encounter between the artist and the city.
In a convivial mode: BAR project resident presentations reflects àngels barcelona’s interest in collaborating with collective projects related to the context of the city of Barcelona. This project acts as an addition to “The posible conditions”, curated by Myriam Rubio, Rosario Ateaga and Gris García, that presented projects, actions and interventions by Javier Peñafiel, Quim Pujol, Sol Prado, Yara Haskiel, Solange Jacobs, Jérôme Lefaure, Olivier Collet (Homesession) and Andrés Vial.

Gaby Felten (b.1981) studied at the California College of the Arts (Oakland/San Francisco, 2005) and The Royal Academy of the Arts in The Hague (KABK, 2014). She has resided in 9 countries on 3 different continents during her lifetime. Her artistic practice has greatly been influenced by these episodes of temporary residence. Labor, identity formation and alienation are subjects which she deals with often. In August 2012 she was invited to show her performance The Department of Surplus Person Affairs at the Matadero in Madrid during the satellite programming of the exhibition Our Work is Never Over (2012). In 2014 she received the Pro Invest grant from STROOM, an artist support organization based in The Hague. In 2015 she was asked by the Montreal art journal Le Merle (Volume 3, nr. 1) to contribute an article on the changing landscape of cultural support in the Netherlands. Gaby regularly shows her work in group exhibits in The Hague, in locations such as Gemak, Nest, Nutshuis, Korzo and Hoop.
Bar project is an independent, mobile and non-profit organization dedicated to supporting international artists and curators and promoting trans-disciplinary dialogue, hospitality, collaboration and exchange.
BAR project's 2015 residency program is inviting artists and curators whose work research and essay different ways of living together in the world or alternative forms of community. (www.barproject.net)

àngels barcelona se complace en presentar los proyectos de las artistas Gaby Felten y Alex Martinis Roe y la comisaria Maja Ćirić, fruto de su trabajo de investigación en el contexto de Barcelona a partir de su residencia en BAR project, agencia curatorial que promueve el diálogo, la hospitalidad, la colaboración y el intercambio entre artistas y comisarios a nivel local e internacional.
Not in an Emancipated Way la primera de las tres presentaciones de In a convivial mode, una serie de exposiciones, acciones, conversaciones y proyecciones de las residentes de BAR project: Gaby Felten, Maja Ćirić y Alex Martinis Roe. En lugar de buscar tres espacios diferentes, y debido a la convivencia, cercanía y proximidad que vivir y trabajar juntas ha generado entre ellas, las residentes deciden presentar sus proyectos en el mismo contexto físico. Más allá de un proceso de trabajo colaborativo, es un intento de crear un espacio de presentación pública común, donde el diálogo entre sus prácticas pueda continuar sucediendo.
Not in an Emancipated Way es una exposición conformada por una serie de trabajos que la artista Gaby Felten ha producido durante su residencia. Sus instalaciones, videos y esculturas reaccionan a su contexto y ambiente directo, respondiendo ingenuamente y con un enfoque práctico a la información visual de sus encuentros fortuitos con Barcelona. Ciertos elementos que se repiten en toda la ciudad - la plaza, la fuente pública, el sifón, la placa de la calle de mármol, el cartel del mendigo, el carrito de la compra de productos reciclados, la influencia de la cultura de América Latina o África, y muchos más - son los estímulos a los que Felten reacciona desde su posición en un contexto laboral globalizado occidental.
De la misma forma que ella se presenta al contexto de Barcelona, parcialmente como artista, todas las obras incorporan un elemento de fragmentación: una señal de tráfico rota, el signo de un mendigo desgarrado o mapas de países de África, América Latina y el continente europeo reconfigurados, creando un testigo caleidoscópico del encuentro entre artista y ciudad.
In a convivial mode: BAR project resident presentations refleja el interés de àngels barcelona por trabajar con proyectos colectivos y relacionados con el contexto de la ciudad. Este ciclo se suma al proyecto anterior, “Las Condiciones Posibles” comisariado por Myriam Rubio, Rosario Ateaga y Gris García con proyectos, acciones e intervenciones de Javier Peñafiel, Quim Pujol, Sol Prado, Yara Haskiel, Solange Jacobs, Jérôme Lefaure, Olivier Collet (Homesession) y Andrés Vial.

Ha residido en 9 países en 3 continentes diferentes durante su vida. Su práctica artística en gran medida ha sido influenciado por estos episodios de residencia temporal. Trabajo, conformación de la identidad y alienación son algunos de los temas en torno a los cuales su práctica circula con frecuencia. En agosto de 2012 fue invitada mostrar su performance The Department of Surplus Person Affairs en el Matadero de Madrid durante la programación satélite de la exposición Our Work is Never Over (2012). En 2014 recibió la beca Pro Invest de STROOM, una organización de apoyo a los artistas con sede en La Haya. En 2015 contribuyó a la revista de arte de Montreal Le Merle (Volumen 3,. Nr 1) con un artículo para en el paisaje cambiante de apoyo cultural en los Países Bajos. Gaby muestra regularmente su trabajo en exposiciones colectivas en La Haya, en lugares como Gemak, Nest, Nutshuis, Korzo and Hoop.
BAR project es una organización independiente, móvil y sin ánimo de lucro dedicada a respaldar a artistas y comisarios internacionales y a promover el diálogo trans-disciplinar, la hospitalidad, la colaboración y el intercambio.
