STATEMENT

(ENG) Sofia Hultén's work questions the temporality of objects. Ordinary household items or found objects acquire alternative options through the artistic process. A sequence based on discarded shoes, for instance, becomes an invisible journey and an urban navigation system. Objects are filled with other ideas, and functionality becomes just one of many attributes. Hultén’s video works document the artist undertaking a series of seemingly futile or absurd tasks such as repeatedly destroying and repairing objects, finding hiding places within an office and disguising herself amongst street furniture. Her artworks involve a preoccupation with the relationship between human beings and the object world.

Hultén’s work is at once rigorously produced and modestly homemade – a combination of meticulousness and makeshift ingenuity. It is engaging through its familiarity and suspense. Her characters are purposeful in their waiting and the artist invites us to wait with them, filling in time with a kind of activity that inspires imaginative thought. Instead of narrative closures, we enjoy the open endings.

(CAST) El trabajo de Sofia Hultén pone en duda la temporalidad de los objetos. Los objetos domésticos o encontrados contienen potencialmente múltiples historias a través del proceso artístico. Por ejemplo, una secuencia de zapatos encontrados en la calle se convierte en un recorrido invisible y en un sistema de navegación urbana. Los objetos se cargan de otras ideas y su funcionalidad pasa a ser una característica más. Los videos de Hultén documentan a la artista emprendiendo una serie de tareas aparentemente inútiles o absurdas, como destruir y reparar objetos repetidamente, buscar escondites dentro de una oficina y disfrazarse entre los muebles de la calle. Sus obras de arte implican una preocupación por la relación entre los seres humanos y el mundo de los objetos.

La obra de Hultén es a la vez rigurosamente producida y modestamente casera: una combinación de meticulosidad e ingenio improvisado. Es atrapante a través de su familiaridad y suspenso. Sus personajes tienen un propósito en su espera y la artista nos invita a esperar con ellos, llenando el tiempo con un tipo de actividad que inspira el pensamiento imaginativo. En lugar de cierres narrativos, disfrutamos de los finales abiertos.

 

 BIO

(ENG) Sofia Hultén was born in Stockholm in 1972 and grew up in Birmingham, where she studied sculpture at Sheffield Hallam University. In 1998 she moved to Berlin for a scholarship from the Hochschule der Künste, where she lives today. From 2018 she will be the chair of sculpture at the Braunschweig University of Art and Design. The artist now works with video, installations, photography and objects.

Sofia Hulten has participated in group exhibitions in Sweden, Germany, France, England, Ireland, Greece, Norway, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, the United States, Iceland, China, Israel, Danmark and Spain. (CAST) Sofia Hultén nació en Estocolmo en 1972 y se crió en Birmingham, donde estudió escultura en la Universidad Sheffield Hallam. En 1998 se mudó a Berlín para obtener una beca de la Hochschule der Künste, donde vive actualmente. A partir de 2018 será la catedrática de escultura en la Universidad de Arte y Diseño de Braunschweig. La artista trabaja hoy en día con video, instalaciones, fotografía y objetos.
