(ENG) The practice of preparing an ornate dowry box for a daughter is a common family tradition in regions ranging from Afghanistan to India and beyond. The boxes are often artfully constructed by a craftsperson, clad in hammered metal and filled with precious objects. Despite the fact that I was never given a box myself, my parents provided me with a different kind of gift: that of mobility and freedom.

The design of the skateboard comes from a childhood memory that Mukesh Saab and I discussed during our time working together. Nightingales are common in poetry, songs, and decorative arts, and are a part of Dreams on Wheels Delhi by way of my earliest memories in Delhi, where the bird’s song could be heard about our home each evening. 

(CAST) La práctica de preparar una caja ornamentada como dote para la hija es una tradición familiar común en regiones de Afganistán y la India. Las cajas se construyen artesanalmente, recubierta con metal y llena de objetos preciosos. Aunque yo nunca recibí una de estas cajas, mis padres me dieron un regalo distinto para mi futuro: el de la mobilidad y la libertad.

El diseño de un monopatín proviene de un recuerdo de infancia que Mukesh Saab, un trebajador de metal, y yo discutimos mientras trabajábamos.
